Marin Generators

One licensed electrical contractor, one shop on Kerner Boulevard in San Rafael, and crews covering every town in Marin. We install whole house generators, backup systems, commercial and industrial sets, we repair and service every brand including the ones we did not sell, and we rent towable machines for events and job sites.

How Long We Have Been Doing This

We have been installing and servicing standby power across Marin since 2011. The work has changed a good deal in that time. The early years were mostly winter storm outages in the canyons; the last several have added the public safety power shutoffs, which brought a completely different set of customers to the phone, in warm weather, with clear skies and no power for two days. What has not changed is the thing that decides whether a generator is any use, which is whether somebody sized it properly and then kept servicing it.

The Story Behind The Company

The company started because of a pattern the founder kept meeting as a service electrician: houses with expensive standby generators that did not work. Not broken exactly, just never maintained, never load tested, sized off a guess, and in two memorable cases never actually wired to a transfer switch at all. Building a company that treats the specification and the annual service as the product, rather than as paperwork around a machine sale, turned out to be a business, because people will happily pay a fair price for equipment that starts on the night they need it.

The Crew

Our engineers are licensed electricians with manufacturer training on the residential and commercial platforms we install, and the ones running industrial work have spent years around diesel plant, fuel systems and switchgear. Between them they know which Mill Valley lanes a delivery truck will not make, which Ross Valley streets sit in a flood zone, where the gas main stops above Fairfax, and which town planning counters want a drawing before they will discuss a setback. None of that is written down anywhere, and it is why the same people survey, install and come back to service.

The Brands We Work With

We install and service Generac, Kohler, Cummins and Champion, and we repair Caterpillar and most other makes as well, whoever originally supplied them. Being independent of a single manufacturer is deliberate, because it means the machine we recommend follows the property, the fuel and the noise constraints rather than following our stock. That covers residential whole house generators and backup systems, three-phase commercial generators, large industrial diesel sets, the repair and maintenance work behind all of it, and a hire fleet of towable generators. Keeping the whole range of standby power installed, repaired and rented under one roof is what stops a change of plan becoming a sourcing problem.

Why We Like The Work

It is unglamorous and it matters at exactly the moment nothing else is working. A house on a well that keeps its water through a four-day shutoff. A restaurant that does not lose a walk-in over a holiday weekend. A wedding on a ranch where nobody ever knew there was a generator behind the trees. Standby power is invisible when it is done properly, and that is the whole appeal of doing it properly.
